The danger of Radon
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Radon is the leading cause of Lung Cancer among non-smokers, even more than second-hand smoke!
Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive and carcinogenic gas. Radon is produced naturally through the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe.
How does Radon get in the home?
Since Radon is mainly found in soil, the most common place for it to enter the home is from under the foundation and through the walls. All homes have imperfections (even new constructions) that allow enough space for air to travel. The home then traps the Radon inside and builds over time.
The Radon Statistics
The below statistics are based on EPA findings.
2nd
Radon is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer (more than secondhand smoke).
21,000
The number of people who die from Radon caused Lung Cancer annually (that’s just over 3,000 more fatalities as compared to drunk driving).
1/15
One in fifteen homes is estimated to have elevated levels of Radon.
What can be done about it?
A Radon level above 4 picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L) or higher is considered hazardous.
In most cases a Radon Mitigation System can be put in place to control the movement of sub-foundation air up and out of the home.
In some cases, a more aggressive approach might need to be taken including foundation repairs.
